Improving Sensor Connection, with user feedback
Problem
A study conducted with representative users identified several issues in the existing Sensor Connection workflow.
Brief
Use study data to identify areas for improvement in the MS 2.0 Sensor Connection workflow.
Analysis of the Problem
Formative Usability Evaluation 1 (FUE1)
The scope for FUE1, highlighted below in grey, focused on testing the existing onboarding workflow without the Care Team functionality. This allowed us to evaluate how easily users could onboard independently.

FUE1 Results and Observations
15 participants took part in the study. While all were able to complete the Sensor Connection workflow, either independently or with some difficulty, many encountered challenges throughout the process.

Key Observations

Other Observations
-
Participants were unclear about how long they needed to hold the sensor button when prompted to turn it on
-
Participants had difficulty locating the sensors in the box immediately upon unboxing
Final Design
Unboxing
-
An animation was added to help users more easily locate the sensors within the packaging
Turning on Sensors
-
The original animation was updated to more clearly indicate the correct duration for pressing the sensor button

Pairing Sensors
-
The entire sensor is displayed in the image
-
The 'Looking for sensors' spinner disappears once the sensor is successfully located
-
Selecting the smaller CTA now navigates the user to the next screen, eliminating the need for the second 'Pair' CTA
-
A clearer distinction has been made between the locations of the ID and the Pin in the visual
.png)
Global Changes
-
The CTA style was updated globally to increase its prominence
Results and Performance in Next Study
We observed a significant improvement in FUE2. Participants no longer hesitated after selecting the sensor from the list, thanks to the removal of the second CTA. Additionally, participants were able to locate the PIN easily.
MS 3.0
Another usability improvement aimed at simplifying remote onboarding in MS 3.0 was the decision to remove the sensor PIN altogether.
