Knee Photo

Background

An important measure of a patient’s recovery is how well the knee looks. Typically a surgeon wants to look the knee and check for swelling or the signs of an infection.

‘Take Knee Photo’ is scheduled in the Daily Tasks every Tuesday and Thursday during the first 4 weeks of a patient’s recovery from surgery, and every Tuesday up until 90 days post-surgery.

WHAT WAS REQUIRED OF THE PATIENT?

  1. To get into a suitable position

  2. To capture a clear photo of the whole knee taken vertically from above, including any scaring or swelling

  3. Input any questions/concerns

First feedback

Presented the prototype below to a friendly clinician and the feedback was as followed:

  • Clinician suggested that the app should support some ‘example’ photos - This was the main focus of this initial review

  • What was wanted from a ‘good’ photo was the scar placed directly down the middle of the screen

Next steps

  • Explored a ‘frame’ in the camera view to help guide the patient

  • Instructed patient to ‘Align the top and bottom of the scar along the central line when taking a knee photo’

  • Looked at better ways to instruct getting into the right position

  • Included options to view example photos

Learnt too, that a patient simply cannot raise their leg themselves without support so looked at alternative ways which a patient might successfully capture a picture with a straight leg

Final outcome 1/2

After a couple of rounds of feedback with the friendly clincian...

  • Amended the illustration to show support required to take a picture (foot rest). In observing patients try and do this task I suggested this was the most suitable way to instruct

  • Added the ‘Example Photo’ in a tab on screen 2. The issue with the previous version was the patient might have thought that the examples were previous photos taken by them, these being an overlay over the live camera

  • Wrote the CTAs to be more descriptive

Final outcome 2/2

  • Added option to confirm/retake

  • Updated the comments sections so that the ‘Submit’ CTA was always active and therefore not leaving a comment was more clearly an option
